Danish A Wall of Fame

Danish A students break new AIS records on the hall of fame.

Danish at AIS is taught on 3 levels: A, B and C. Danish A is for native-level Danish students, who study Danish as a language and literature, which mostly follows the Danish national curriculum. At the end of MYP5, Danish A students are entered into the Danish-only afgangprøve, which is the end-of-school exam taken in most Danish folkeskoles.

To get students ready for this, and to push their thinking in spelling, writing and grammar, Mr Tobias offers different challenges that students can participate in.

For the past 9 years, Mr Tobias has challenged his Danish A students to push the boundaries of their language learning through the Grammatikrytteren Wall of Fame. Grammatikrytteren is a grammar booklet, that the students complete as homework 7 months of the school year, and for this challenge they finish 15 pages of the workbook in one sitting, timing themselves.

In March, a 6 year old record was broken by Shahlo in MYP 5A. Shahlo finished the 15 pages of grammar in 30 minutes with 0 mistakes!! To quote Mr Tobias, “I couldn’t do that if I tried”. This is an amazing feat, and we are extremely impressed by her achievement. Shahlo is the now the student, that in the past 9 years of Danish A at AIS, has completed a Grammatikrytteren in the shortest amount of time.  And sits on the Wall of Fame with fellow champions who go back to 2016. One other student, in MYP3 also joins the Wall of fame this year, taking 12th spot.

In May, the Gyldendal retskrivningsprøve takes place. This is a dictation challenge, testing students’ ability to write a text accurately in terms of spelling and grammar. This is a huge challenge of focus and precision, that challenges a student’s attention to detail and proofreading skills.

In MYP3, Lauge is the third student ever in AIS history to achieve 100% in this task, joining his older brother in second spot (2024) and Emilie in first spot (2021) on the Wall of Fame.

These challenges are optional for students to try, so those that decided to compete showed a good curiosity and personal determination. They were risk-takers, and demonstrated their knowledge and responsibility for their own learning. These tasks, whilst also getting them to focus on technical language accuracy, is also a challenge of time management, where they can learn to gauge how long it actually takes to complete the task. It is also a demonstration of accuracy and focus, where the challenge comes in being thorough in your work, to build sharper proofreading skills, and to pay attention to detail. These skills are extremely useful for students who are preparing for their MYP5 eAssessments and beyond.
